Inbound Wealth Planning for the Global Family
This session will discuss the ever-evolving nature of international tax planning for the non-U.S. resident, non-U.S. citizen with activities in the United States (referred to as “inbound activities”). While this seminar will include a discussion of core international tax principles, the discussion will provide the necessary planning strategies a life insurance practitioner/planner will need to provide their clients, which will assist with mitigating unintended U S tax consequences.

Cynthia D. Brittain is Trust Advisor Team Lead for the Santa Barbara Region. In this role, Ms. Brittain is responsible for collaborating with clients and their counsel on estate planning strategies and addressing fiduciary and tax issues that arise during the course of trust administration. In addition, Ms. Brittain provides guidance on Northern’s international capabilities and services for global families, including tax efficient US investing for non-resident aliens, as well as planning strategies utilizing Northern’s Delaware and Nevada Trust capabilities. Ms. Brittain joined Northern in 2012 and is integral to serving affluent clients and growing Northern Trust’s business in Southern California.
Prior to joining Northern Trust, Ms. Brittain served as Counsel at McKenna, Long & Aldridge, LLP in Los Angeles, California where she focused her practice on domestic and international estate and tax planning. In her legal practice, Ms. Brittain successfully advised her clients on tax mitigation strategies as well as on succession plans for family –owned companies.
Ms. Brittain also practiced as an Attorney with the international law firm Withers, in its London and Hong Kong offices. In this capacity, Ms. Brittain focused primarily on international cross border planning for large global families. Before moving to Europe, Ms. Brittain was a Partner in the Santa Barbara law firm, Ambrecht & Brittain, for nearly 10 years. Ms. Brittain began her legal career as a prosecutor in San Diego where she chaired the Financial Crimes committee. Ms. Brittain speaks nationally on cross border planning. In Hong Kong, Ms. Brittain was an active member in the California Association of China & Hong Kong, SAR.
Ms. Brittain received her LL.M (Master of Laws) in Taxation from The University of San Diego, and her Juris Doctor from California Western School of Law where she served on Law Review/International Law Journal. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Foreign Policy from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Ms. Brittain has studied in Moscow and Paris. She is a member of the Estate and Trust Committee and Tax Committee of the California State Bar Association, and is a current member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners – Los Angeles chapter She served as President of the Ventura Estate Planning Council in 2007, and is currently a Co-Chair of the Tax Committee for the Santa Barbara County Bar Association. Ms. Brittain serves on several local charity boards and has provided pro bono legal work on their behalf.
